What Is A TV Continuity Broadcast Voice?
TV Continuity, also known as “The Broadcast Voice” are the short announcements that take place between programs on a TV network.
While they act as a summation of the schedule, to explain both the previous program and anything upcoming in the TV schedule, they’re primarily used as a method of creating a brand and identify for the network.
Continuity Announcers can also be used for impromptu emergency announcements. These can be used in the case of breaking news stories or technical problems with the channel. While these are often pre-recorded in the case of emergencies, Continuity Announcers can also provide live or almost live updates about a channel in special circumstances.
In the past, especially in European countries, Continuity Announcers were traditionally seen on screen, acting as an in-person host of the viewer in between programming. However, in recent decades, Continuity Announcers have switched over to be primarily delivered through voiceover, with in-person announcers now only happening on a handful of TV networks across Europe.
Since the 50’s, Continuity Announcers have been replaced by voiceovers due to their ability to deliver more content to the viewer much faster than an on-camera announcer.
The technical limitations of having to heat up camera equipment before use also played a big part in this shift away from on-camera announcers. Examples of this can be seen in the first breaking news bulletins of the Kennedy Assassination, which used audio clips to deliver breaking news due to the time delay in creating visual news updates for the event.
This push for voiceover only TV Continuity Announcement has continued today, with nearly every network around the world utilising Continuity Announcers to act as their schedule guide for their viewing audience.
